Remarkable moment in American history: Obama’s acceptance speech
I hope to be part of the change with the Driehaus for Congress Web site. Here’s what “Open Left” had to say about something I have become rather preachy about to those who will listen (and even a few who won’t):
I’ve been browsing dozens of congressional candidate/incumbent campaign web sites and was stunned to realize that apparently the Founding Fathers’ vision of non-partisan elections had been achieved! Why I could hardly find a single “Democrat” or “Republican” running for office or re-election anywhere in America. I thought “It’s a miracle! Surely this means the 111th Congress will be a utopia of respect, compromise and accomplishment. It will be made up almost entirely of non-aligned candidates!”

Another one bites the dust. “Chef,” voiced by Isaac Hayes through 2006 on TV’s South Park, was found dead Sunday. All these people dying, getting in car accidents… What happened to immortality?
Isaac Hayes — a legendary soul singer, songwriter, musician and producer whose career spanned four decades and who achieved unexpected fame later in life as the voice of “South Park” character Chef — died Sunday afternoon (August 10), a spokesperson for the Shelby County, Tennesee, sheriff’s department told WMC-TV in Memphis.

Enjoying a beautiful day in Cincinnati with the lovely Melissa. The weather is amazing for August. Low humidity, around 80 degrees.

Krikorian, an independent candidate for Congress in Ohio’s 2nd District, had his painted campaign truck parked at Big Apple Bagels on Beechmont Avenue and Salem Road in Anderson Township – a prime, high traffic location.
I asked Big Apple’s owner if he was a Kirkorian supporter and he said he wasn’t but that he was told the truck broke down and couldn’t driven. I mentioned that the van – parked conveniently in a corner spot – had a prime spot. He just smiled, shrugged his shoulders and said they’d be by to pick it up later that day.
They apparently did but snagged some prime high visibility space in the interim.

The Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Kiesewetter – who happens to have one of the most interesting blogs in Cincinnati for TV/radio and local TV/radio history junkies – has a nice post about what WXIX-TV (FOX19) is doing this month as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Ch 19 folks are planning a terrific 40th birthday celebration in August with overnight repeats of their best stuff — 1980s “Video Projects” based on WEBN-FMs “Album Projects,” Hattie the Witch and Larry Smith puppets, Michael Flannery’s “Club Nineteen,” the Cool Ghoul, the 1984-86 Hudy Gold/WEBN fireworks, and premieres for the 10 p.m., morning and midnight news.
Even “Bus Full of Nuns,” the 1984 music video with Al Schottelkotte from “Album Project Three.”
I already missed week one of this, which is a bummer. Hoping WXIX puts the videos online somewhere (easy, like YouTube) so I can watch them at my leisure. I just programmed recording on my Tivo through their nifty Web site (another reason I just loves me some Tivo).
Kiesewetter also makes a good point about bad TV practices at WLWT-TV, Ch. 5 regarding their recent 60th anniversary:
This should be great fun. Isnt it nice when a TV station gets it — in contrast to Ch 5, which refused to replay anything from its great wealth of local programming for its 60th anniversary earlier this year? Ch 19 is setting the bar high for Ch 12 and Ch 9, which celebrate their 60th next year.

As the first station in town – with an amazing history – the management there has an alarmingly detached view of what viewers might want to see of back then. I think they missed a great opportunity. If places like Ch. 5 don’t want to air old shows/footage, they ought to donate at least a copy to a public library so the public can see it.

On my way to the Driehaus headquarters. I love the “negative” commute. Nearly my own private bus. And it is quick!

That “guy to defend itself” is typically referred to as the city solicitor, a citified version of a county prosecutor. And just moments ago, City Manager Milton Dohoney announced who the guy is… so, without further adieu…drum roll… a portion of a press release from Meg Olberding, city spokeswoman:
“John P. Curp, Esq. as the new City Solicitor, the highest ranking lawyer for the City of Cincinnati. Curp currently is a partner with the law firm Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP in Columbus in the Business and Finance Department. His practice areas have provided him with experience including business incentives, land use, property tax issues, construction and public works projects, and employment law. Curp will begin working for the city on September 2.
“John’s extensive business and financing background will be a great boon to our efforts to attract and retain companies and jobs in the city,†said Dohoney. “He is well versed in public law and his integrity and leadership will serve the city organization and the people of Cincinnati well.”
This is the guy you want to talk to next time you want to sue the city of Cincinnati, or if you, say, get sued by the city of Cincinnati. Or get a traffic ticket from a city cop or get arrested in the city. He can throw the book at you. Or, say, you’re a City Council member and want to know, say, if it’s OK legally to build a fence around Over-the-Rhine. He will tell the city’s elected and non-elected employees what they can get away with legally – and hopefully not get sued. It’s nothing personal. Just his job.
This is some heartbreaking news:
TMZ has learned that Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, has been injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi.
Cops tell us the “Dark Knight” star was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM last night north of the small town of Ruleville. He was airlifted from the accident scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Were told alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the wreck…
Let’s hope he ends up being OK, but this does not sound good at all.
