Recently, I asked to be subscribed to a local list of interesting things to do called “Tri-State Treasures,” curated by Jim Kesner. It was after a friend shared a copy of her copy of the weekly email.

It’s chock-full of great little events and happenings in town that seem to be all together missing from others places – plus notices about the usual or more widely-publicized ones. It’s only been about a month since I started receiving it and have been very pleased with what I have found, including this little gem I got today about discussion around social media. I, of course, was interested and laughed out loud when I read the description:

Social Networking – Discussion [Friday 17 June @ 6:30pm]: The Association for Psychoanalytic Thought presents this discussion featuring William Wetly & Matt McBride. Mr. Welty will focus on how online social networking & interaction is characterized by narcissism, leading to both antagonistic & self-punishing superego relationships which, within that framework is the possibility of obscene jouissance. Mr. McBride will examine how Facebook, as a medium, is constituted & how it uniquely serves to facilitate a kind of hysteria. Drawing on cultural theories, Matt will explain why Facebook is a departure from previous media & how those differences rob users of their subjectivity in ways heretofore unseen in earlier media. I mostly like what was said, aside from the “never talk off the record” part and no mention of “never lying” to a reporter, which is something I think people fall into a lot.

At the end of the class we were asked to role play a crisis situation discussion with a member of the media. The person I’m working with runs a small private school and the scenario we came up with a child was picked up by an authorized person, namely a parent who did not have custody, and was now missing. I played the reporter. We decided to keep it light (after hearing a class full of people take it seriously).

CNBC is reporting on-air that Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence from Apple until June to “focus on his health.” According to the report, Tim Cook will handle day-to-day operations at the company in the interim.

Here is the email that Jobs sent to Apple employees this afternoon:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

A search in Google returned several pay calendar printers (even for ones that just print online, but you can add your own stuff… haven’t they heard of Google Calendar??), but this one was free. So, I thought I would share.
