Ursula VernonIt's not easy for Danny Dragonbreath to be the sole mythical creature in a school for reptiles and amphibians?especially because he can't breathe fire like other dragons (as the school bully loves to remind him). But having a unique family comes in handy sometimes, like when his sea-serpent cousin takes Danny and his best iguana friend on a mindboggling underwater tour, complete with vomiting sea cucumbers and giant squid. It sure beats reading the encyclopedia to research his ocean report . . .

Using a hybrid of comic-book panels and text, Ursula Vernon introduces an irresistible set of characters with a penchant for getting themselves into sticky situations. It's perfect for both the classroom and fans of Wimpy Kid and Bad Kitty.

A Confederacy of Dunces
John Kennedy TooleA Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

It's time to face facts. Low fat diets don't work. Thousands of Americans on low-fat, high-carbohydrate regimes gain back their weight in record numbers, often wreaking unhealthy havoc on their bodies. Why? Because the culprit isn't too much fat, it's too much sugar—and low-fat food is full of it. The truth is sugar causes the production of insulin which, in large amounts, keeps your weight from dropping off, no matter how strictly you diet or how often you exercise. Just look at the ingredients of your favorite foods: sugar is everywhere. So how can you possibly avoid it? The answer: SUGAR BUSTERS!

Developed by three renowned physicians and a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, SUGAR BUSTERS! is a revolutionary new diet plan based on sound nutritional principles that shows you how to eliminate sugar from your daily menu through easy-to-follow recipes and meal plans. This effective and groundbreaking program steers you away from overhyped (and insulin-producing) starches such as potatoes and pasta, white bread and white rice, carrots and corn—and leads you toward a sensible consumption of delicious foods once considered taboo. With SUGAR BUSTERS! you will

Feel great, increase your energy, and prevent chronic disease

Simple, practical, and easy to adapt to your busy lifestyle—including savory gourmet meal plans designed by twelve of New Orleans's famous restaurants like Antoine's, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, and Brennan's—SUGAR BUSTERS! is the diet of the future, an amazing, new approach to eating, nutrition, and health. Cutting calories in the diet only leads to temporary weight loss.
Fats are vitally important to your body's metabolic process.
Large meals should never be eaten before going to bed—because cholesterol is also manufactured at night.
Fruits should not be eaten in combination with carbohydrates and fats.
A glass of wine has less sugar than an ear of corn.
Baked potatoes quickly convert to sugar in your stomach.

Forget the fight against fat! Break the sugar-starch habit today and enjoy the foods you love as you get healthy and lose weight with SUGAR BUSTERS!

The Family Of Man
Edward SteichenHailed as the most successful exhibition of photography ever assembled, The Family of Man opened at The Museum of Modern Art, New York in January 1955. This book, the permanent embodiment of Edward Steichen's monumental exhibition, reproduces all of the 503 images that Steichen described as "a mirror of the essential oneness of mankind throughout the world. Photographs made in all parts of the world, of the gamut of life from birth to death." A classic and inspiring work, The Family of Man has been in print for more than 40 years. The New York Times once wrote that it "symbolizes the universality of human emotions." First produced by a magazine publisher and sold by the hundreds of thousands on newsstands and in airport shops, The Family of Man has been in more recent years published by the Museum. It has been continuously in print since 1955; the present thirtieth-anniversary edition was prepared from original photographs with all new duotone plates in 1986.

Counting by 7s
Holly Goldberg SloanA New York Times Bestseller

In the tradition of Out of My Mind, Wonder, and Mockingbird, this is an intensely moving middle grade novel about being an outsider, coping with loss, and discovering the true meaning of family.

Willow Chance is a twelve-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by 7s. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn’t kept her from leading a quietly happy life . . . until now.
Suddenly Willow’s world is tragically changed when her parents both die in a car crash, leaving her alone in a baffling world. The triumph of this book is that it is not a tragedy. This extraordinarily odd, but extraordinarily endearing, girl manages to push through her grief. Her journey to find a fascinatingly diverse and fully believable surrogate family is a joy and a revelation to read.

* “Willow's story is one of renewal, and her journey of rebuilding the ties that unite people as a family will stay in readers' hearts long after the last page.”—School Library Journal starred review

* “A graceful, meaningful tale featuring a cast of charming, well-rounded characters who learn sweet—but never cloying—lessons about resourcefulness, community, and true resilience in the face of loss.”—Booklist starred review

* “What sets this novel apart from the average orphan-finds-a-home book is its lack of sentimentality, its truly multicultural cast (Willow describes herself as a “person of color”; Mai and Quang-ha are of mixed Vietnamese, African American, and Mexican ancestry), and its tone. . . . Poignant.”—The Horn Book starred review

"In achingly beautiful prose, Holly Goldberg Sloan has written a delightful tale of transformation that’s a celebration of life in all its wondrous, hilarious and confounding glory. Counting by 7s is a triumph."—Maria Semple, author of Where’d You Go, Bernadette

“A Truly Inclusive Way to Answer the Question 'Where Do Babies Come From?': The new book What Makes a Baby offers an origin story for all children, no matter what their families look like." —The Atlantic

"This is a solid, occasionally quirky book on an important topic."—School Library Journal

Geared to readers from preschool to age eight, What Makes a Baby is a book for every kind of family and every kind of kid. It is a twenty-first century children’s picture book about conception, gestation, and birth, which reflects the reality of our modern time by being inclusive of all kinds of kids, adults, and families, regardless of how many people were involved, their orientation, gender and other identity, or family composition. Just as important, the story doesn’t gender people or body parts, so most parents and families will find that it leaves room for them to educate their child without having to erase their own experience.

Written by sexuality educator Cory Silverberg, and illustrated by award-winning Canadian artist Fiona Smyth, What Makes a Baby is as fun to look at as it is useful to read.

Schulz has been cartooning for an astonishing 50 years (the "Peanuts" strip itself debuted October 2, 1950, but he drew an earlier incarnation called "Li'l Folks" before that). Peanuts: A Golden Celebration is a remarkable collection of strips spanning that time period. Readers get to see the first appearance of Linus, Marcy, Pigpen, and Woodstock, and even the momentous first time Lucy holds a football for Charlie Brown to kick. Schulz comments on the cartoons and his inspirations via notes in the margin, ranging from boyhood stories about his father (a barber, just like Charlie Brown's) to an account of the time the narcolepsy experts at Stanford University expressed concerns over Peppermint Patty's constant sleeping in class. One of the most interesting inclusions is that of several letters of complaint, ranging from readers whose religious sensibilities have been offended to a 1969 missive from Schulz's own syndicate asking him not to depict Franklin in the same school as the white students anymore. Naturally, the much-loved "Peanuts" holiday specials are covered, as is the musical adaptation You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, but it's the strips that really make the book. Readers can follow the evolution of Schulz's drawing style—deliberately less realistic as the years went on—and even check out a few panels drawn by Schulz's own cartooning heroes. This is a terrific compilation that serves well both as a chronicle of popular culture and as just a really funny collection of comic strips. Don't wait for the Great Pumpkin to bring you one. —Ali Davis

The Catcher in the Rye
J.D. SalingerAnyone who has read J.D. Salinger's New Yorker stories ? particularly A Perfect Day for Bananafish, Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut, The Laughing Man, and For Esme ? With Love and Squalor, will not be surprised by the fact that his first novel is fully of children. The hero-narrator of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep.

White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Racism
Paula S. RothenbergStudies of racism often focus on its devastating effects on the victims of prejudice. But no discussion of race is complete without exploring the other side—the ways in which some people or groups actually benefit, deliberately or inadvertently, from racial bias.
White Privilege, Second Edition, the revision to the ground-breaking anthology from Paula Rothenberg, continues her efforts from the first edition. Two new essays contribute to the discussion of the nature and history of white power. The concluding section again challenges readers to explore ideas for using the power and the concept of white privilege to help combat racism in their own lives.
Brief, inexpensive, and easily integrated with other texts, this interdisciplinary collection of commonsense, non-rhetorical readings lets educators incorporate discussions of whiteness and white privilege into a variety of disciplines, including sociology, English composition, psychology, social work, women's studies, political science, and American studies.

Follow the Blue Blazes: A Guide To Hiking Ohio's Buckeye Trail
Robert J. PondUnique among hiking trails is the one that forms a complete loop around the state of Ohio. That 1,200-mile trail is called the Buckeye Trail. Showing the way on tree trunks, rocks, and other natural signposts are the blue painted markings called “the blue blazes.” In Follow the Blue Blazes, the reader embarks on a journey to discover a part of Ohio largely unseen except along this great path.

Beginning with the startling rock formations and graceful waterfalls of Old Man’s Cave in southern Ohio, and leading clockwise around the state to visit expansive forests, lovely parks, ancient mounds, historic canals and battlefields, and scenic river trails, experienced trailsman Robert J. Pond provides a captivating look at each section of the trail.

Each chapter features an overview of a 100-mile section of the trail and three self-guided featured hikes. The overviews, with accompanying maps, may be read consecutively to acquaint the reader with the entire course of the blue blazes. But most readers will best enjoy the Buckeye Trail by taking the guide along on featured hikes. Each hike is supported by a detailed but easy-to-follow map and includes explicit directions to trailheads and approximate hiking times.

In addition to many outlying areas, the extensive Buckeye Trail is accessible in or near Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron. Robert Pond has supplemented each description with interesting details about the geology and the diverse habitats of flora and fauna. Readers, too, can enjoy the beauty and wonders of Ohio if they Follow the Blue Blazes.

Reasons My Kid Is Crying
Greg PembrokeA glimpse into the tribulations of parenting that is part documentary, part therapy, and completely hilarious.
It all started when busy father Greg Pembroke posted a few pictures online of his three-year-old son, mid-tantrum, alongside the reason his son was crying: He had broken his bit of cheese in half. In Reasons My Kid is Crying, Greg collects together photos sent from parents around the world, documenting the many, completely logical reasons why small children cry.  Among them: “I let him play on the grass” . . . “He ran out of toys to throw into his pool” . . . “The neighbor’s dog isn’t outside”.  The result is both an affectionate portrait of the universal, baffling logic of toddlers—and a reminder for burned-out parents everywhere that they are not alone.

Bull Head: The Selected Writings of Brian J. Mueller 1991–2001
Brian MuellerBull Head is a medley of writings covering a wide variety of subjects, emotions, and occasions. As a whole it gives tremendous insight into the mind of the author, but every reader will no doubt identify with individual pieces and the universal themes of humanity it explores. The first section contains works of prose ranging from the intensely romantic to the peculiarly fascinating. The goal is certainly to stimulate the mind of the reader as the author shares his thoughts and feelings.

The second section contains works of poetry grouped by the times in which they were written. The themes again vary widely covering such subjects as love, depression, metaphysics, and everyday life. It is particularly interesting to watch as the poems evolve in style and subject matter. Throughout the book you will notice the influence of many writers, yet the author will surprise you with his original perspective on those aspects of life which are common to us all.
Bull Heart: A personal and poetic journey through the process of divorce...
Brian Mueller, Kate KearnsFor many people there is profound meaning and integrity in the word yes. Making a deep abiding commitment to another human being becomes a higher calling. Seeking to grow through the very experience of love compels them to maintain body and soul in testament to their partner’s very existence. It is such a lofty goal no one can do it perfectly. Where there is brokenness the light of God and of grace enters.

Bull Heart is a collection of poems chronicling more than a year spent processing and recovering from divorce. These poems not only address the pain, sadness, and anger one feels at the end of a marriage, but also the transformation of this great anguish through the overwhelming surrender to something greater. Employing the lyrical language of poetry in this journey provides a wonderful conduit to the world of healing and forgiveness.

Its present mysteries are attributable to a past that transcends the common story of how cities change over time: it is the story of how a clash between immigrants and "real Americans" helped rob Cincinnati of its image, its soul and its economy. In the 1870s, OTR was comparable to the cultural hearts of Paris and Vienna. By the turn of the last century, the neighborhood was home to roughly three hundred saloons and had over a dozen breweries within or adjacent to its borders. It was beloved by countless citizens and travelers for the exact reasons that others successfully sought to destroy it. This is the story of how the heart of the "Paris of America" became a time capsule.

Imagine: The Spirit of 20th Century American Heroes
Gina MisirogluAmerica 100 years ago was a radically different nation than it is today - there were no airplanes, the moon was beyond reach, women could not vote, and African-Americans were not yet truly free. A century later, accomplishments in these areas and dozens of others have changed the face of America, thanks to the tremendous contributions of some special people. Imagine encompasses all the new frontiers that Americans have embarked upon these past 100 years and celebrates the leaders, thinkers, revolutionaries, artists, and scientists who led the way. Each spread features a striking image of one of these heroes and an excerpt from a speech, song, or published work.

Today the Cincinnati Police Department boasts a dedicated staff of more than 1,000 sworn officers. The Cincinnati police have won such awards as the Best Community Police Program by National League of Cities, the Governor’s Community Policing Award of Excellence, and more than 35 local, state, national, and international awards. Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons
Meg MeekerIn Boys Should Be Boys, one of our most trusted authorities helps parents restore the delights of boyhood and enable today’s boys to become the mature, confident, and thoughtful men of tomorrow. Boys will always be boys–rambunctious, adventurous, and curious, climbing trees, building forts, playing tackle football, and pushing their growing bodies to the limit as part of the rite of passage into manhood. But today our sons face an increasingly hostile world that doesn’t value the high-spirited, magical nature of boys. In a collective call to let our boys be boys, Dr. Meg Meeker explores the secrets to boyhood, including

• why rules and boundaries are crucial–and why boys feel lost without them
• how the outdoors is still the best playground, offering the sense of adventure that only Mother Nature can provide
• the essential ways to preserve a boy’s innocence (and help him grow up)
• the pitfalls moms and dads face when talking to their sons
• why moody and rebellious boys are not normal–and how to address such behavior
• how and when the “big” questions in life should be discussed: why he is here, what his purpose is, and why he is important

Parents are blessed with intuition and heart, but raising sons is a daunting responsibility. This uplifting guide makes the job a little easier.

Local author Jacob R. Mecklenborg emerges from those dusty tomes with a fresh, thought-provoking, full examination of the subway's demise and what its future might hold.

—Midwest Book Review

Go the F*** to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don't always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland. Profane, affectionate, and radically honest, California Book Award-winning author Adam Mansbach's verses perfectly capture the familiar—and unspoken—tribulations of putting your little angel down for the night. In the process, they open up a conversation about parenting, granting us permission to admit our frustrations, and laugh at their absurdity.

With illustrations by Ricardo Cortes, Go the F*** to Sleep is beautiful, subversive, and pants-wettingly funny—a book for parents new, old, and expectant. You probably should not read it to your children.

Seriously, Just Go to Sleep, a children's book inspired by Go the F*** to Sleep and appropriate for kids of all ages, is also available, as well as Seriously, You Have to Eat for finicky ones everywhere!

Life: In The Land Of The Free: September 11 - And After
Editors of LifeLife magazine was only one of many American publications that fielded battlefront correspondents during World War II, but it boasted an uncommonly talented roster of writers and photographers, among them Theodore White, Robert Capa, and Margaret Bourke-White. Their images and reports brought home to American readers the horrors of that distant war, from George Strock's extraordinary photograph of dead American marines on a New Guinea beach to shocking views of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Life's editors also took pains to document the war at home, publishing stories about the contributions of women industrial workers to the war effort (in 1943, the magazine reported, 65 percent of American aircraft-production workers were women) and on the morale-building efforts of Hollywood stalwarts such as Carole Lombard and Bob Hope.

This selection of photographs and extended captions from the pages of Life and other contemporary publications gathers images that have become part of American iconography (such as the Associated Press's famed photograph of the Fighting Sullivans). More usefully, it also includes lesser-known work documenting injustices done to Japanese Americans and African Americans, the sufferings of the wounded, and the loneliness of separation, material overlooked by many other photographic histories of the war. —Gregory McNamee

Why a Daughter Needs a Dad: A Hundred Reasons
Gregory E. LangThe relationship between father and daughter is one that almost defies description. Begun and nurtured in love, the relationship strengthens daughter and dad and brings out the best in both, softening the edges of fathers and providing strength and security for their daughters. The warmth of quiet—and exhuberant—hugs and laughter, the comfort of familiarity, the creation of a history from which both dad and daughter may draw—all this and much more express the rich relationship that exists between fathers and daughters.

Why a Daughter Needs a Dad is one father’s loving reflection upon what he brings—or hopes to bring—to his daughter’s life. “When I sat down to write,” Gregory E. Lang observes, “I wanted to express the essence of what I think is unique about the relationship my daughter and I share.” He began to think of the things they had done together and how important their moments together have been. He thought of what sort of wisdom he could impart by virtue of a strong relationship, how their years together could provide a bond that would guide her as she grew into womanhood. “The first time I read what I had written,” he writes, “I saw a list of what a daughter might ask her father to do for her. The second time I read it I saw a list of all that I hope to do for my daugher.”

The result is a book that will inspire fathers to embrace the important role they hold in their daughters’ lives, to provide them with the love, nurture, and support they seek, and to enjoy the blessings that are reciprocated in kind. FAMILY; GIFT ILLUSTRATED; PHOTOGRAPHS 7” X 8”, 128 PAGES HARDCOVER (CASESIDE)
Why a Daughter Needs a Mom: 100 Reasons
Gregory E. LangMothers and daughters often see themselves when they look at each other: mothers seeing themselves as a child again and daughters glimpsing the woman they will likely become. While this can be frightening at times, it also can be comforting. A daughter needs her mother to tell her the journey from girl to woman is more exciting than frightening and, with the blessing of children and grandchildren, the journey never ends.

In his relationship with his own daughter, Greg Lang admits that while she once was his "playful partner in crime" and "most adoring audience," she now turns to her mother for consolation and understanding. "Mothers are the best listeners," he writes, "whether the news is good or bad. Moms know the reason for tears need not always be explained, but a big hug, a laugh, and chocolate always make things brighter."

A mom is a daughter's role model through each stage of life, and wise and fortunate mothers are able to stay one step ahead of their daughters' development along the way. A mother¹s comfort soothes hurt feelings from playground to prom, from first-job pitfalls to first-pregnancy concerns. There is no substitute in a daughter¹s life for Mom.

With charming photographs of mothers and daughters of various backgrounds and ages, Why a Daughter Needs a Mom will inspire mothers everywhere to empower their daughters to reach their full potential in becoming strong, purposeful, independent women.
Why a Son Needs a Dad: 100 Reasons
Gregory E. Lang"A son needs a dad who knows how to have fun," Gregory Lang begins this testimony to the important roles fathers play in their sons’ lives. Increasingly in today’s world, young boys are being raised either without a father or by fathers who have very little involvement in their sons’ upbringing. A boy needs a dad to teach him how things work, how to talk with girls, and how to tie a tie. He also needs a father who is willing to make sacrifices, one who shows him that love is unselfish and pulls him back when he is headed in the wrong direction. These and more than ninety other things are what a boy must learn about becoming a man. The result is a sequel to the New York Times bestseller Why a Daughter Needs a Dad.

The relationship between father and son is both simple and complex. Simple in that a father remembers the things he learned as a boy and passes them on to his sons. Complex in that it is filled with quiet hugs and laughter, the comfort of familiarity and the adventure of discovery, and the creation of a history from which they both may draw strength and wisdom.

Today Gregory Lang remembers his dad as someone he worshiped as a child, disfavored as a teenager, and now deeply admires. "On my mantle, next to a high school portrait of my mom and amid many photographs of my daughter," he writes, "sits a picture of my dad and me our front yard. He is squatting down, his arms wrapped around me as I stand between his knees. Sometimes I stand before this mantle and look at those photographs and realize how blessed I am." Now that he is a father himself, Lang realizes that being a dad is the greatest challenge and reward a man can have.
Why a Son Needs a Mom: 100 Reasons
Gregory E. LangThe relationship between mothers and sons is unique in many ways. Conceived and nurtured in love, frequently this relationship defines the man a son will become and serves as a reservoir from which he later may draw memories and affection that will guide him as a husband and father. From the warmth and security a boy experiences with his mother, he gains confidence and learns about loving and accepting others, listening and expressing his own ideas and feelings, and exploring the world in which he lives. The things he learns from his mother will highly influence the kind of relationships he will have someday with his own wife and children. Indeed, this rich relationship will define him in many ways throughout his life.

Why a Son Needs a Mom is one son's loving reflection on what his mother brought to his life as well as the aspirations she has been able to fulfill in part because of what he has brought to hers. "When I sat down to write," Greg Lang explains, "I wanted to express the essence of what I think the relationship I have shared with my mom has been all about." He began to ponder the things they did together and how important they were to his development as a boy. He thought of the wisdom he gained from her and how, as he has grown older, those moments have become so important to him. "The first time I read what I had written," he notes, "I saw a list of the things she had brought to my life. When I thought about it more, I realized that not only had she enriched my life, but that she, too, continues to draw strength from the reservoirs of love and respect that have grown between us over the years."

The result is a book that will both inspire mothers and remind sons of the importance their mothers have had in their lives, providing love and nurture and instilling in them the qualities that will serve them well as men.
Defending Jacob: A Novel
Entertainment Weekly • The Boston Globe • Kansas City Star
“A legal thriller that’s comparable to classics such as Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent . . . Tragic and shocking, Defending Jacob is sure to generate buzz.”—Associated Press

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. Andy must. He’s his father. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own—between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he’s tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive.

Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis—a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.

Don't Think of an Elephant!: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate—The Essential Guide for Progressives
George Lakoff, Howard Dean, Don HazenDon't Think of an Elephant! is the definitive handbook for understanding what happened in the 2004 election and communicating effectively about key issues facing America today. Author George Lakoff has become a key advisor to the Democratic party, helping them develop their message and frame the political debate.

In this book Lakoff explains how conservatives think, and how to counter their arguments. He outlines in detail the traditional American values that progressives hold, but are often unable to articulate. Lakoff also breaks down the ways in which conservatives have framed the issues, and provides examples of how progressives can reframe the debate.

Lakoff's years of research and work with environmental and political leaders have been distilled into this essential guide, which shows progressives how to think in terms of values instead of programs, and why people vote their values and identities, often against their best interests.

Don't Think of An Elephant! is the antidote to the last forty years of conservative strategizing and the right wing's stranglehold on political dialogue in the United States.

Read it, take action—and help take America back.

Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys
Dan Kindlon, Michael ThompsonIn Raising Cain, Dan Kindlon, Ph.D., and Michael Thompson, Ph.D., two of the country's leading child psychologists, share what they have learned in more than thirty-five years of combined experience working with boys and their families. They reveal a nation of boys who are hurting—sad, afraid, angry, and silent. Kindlon and Thompson set out to answer this basic, crucial question: What do boys need that they're not getting? They illuminate the forces that threaten our boys, teaching them to believe that "cool" equals macho strength and stoicism. Cutting through outdated theories of "mother blame," "boy biology," and "testosterone," the authors shed light on the destructive emotional training our boys receive—the emotional miseducation of boys.

Kindlon and Thompson make a compelling case that emotional literacy is the most valuable gift we can offer our sons, urging parents to recognize the price boys pay when we hold them to an impossible standard of manhood. They identify the social and emotional challenges that boys encounter in school and show how parents can help boys cultivate emotional awareness and empathy—giving them the vital connections and support they need to navigate the social pressures of youth.
My First Search & Find Animal Friends
Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris
Christopher Kemp“Preternaturally hardened whale dung” is not the first image that comes to mind when we think of perfume, otherwise a symbol of glamour and allure. But the key ingredient that makes the sophisticated scent linger on the skin is precisely this bizarre digestive by-product—ambergris. Despite being one of the world’s most expensive substances (its value is nearly that of gold and has at times in history been triple it), ambergris is also one of the world’s least known. But with this unusual and highly alluring book, Christopher Kemp promises to change that by uncovering the unique history of ambergris.

A rare secretion produced only by sperm whales, which have a fondness for squid but an inability to digest their beaks, ambergris is expelled at sea and floats on ocean currents for years, slowly transforming, before it sometimes washes ashore looking like a nondescript waxy pebble. It can appear almost anywhere but is found so rarely, it might as well appear nowhere. Kemp’s journey begins with an encounter on a New Zealand beach with a giant lump of faux ambergris—determined after much excitement to nothing more exotic than lard—that inspires a comprehensive quest to seek out ambergris and its story. He takes us from the wild, rocky New Zealand coastline to Stewart Island, a remote, windswept island in the southern seas, to Boston and Cape Cod, and back again. Along the way, he tracks down the secretive collectors and traders who populate the clandestine modern-day ambergris trade.

Floating Gold is an entertaining and lively history that covers not only these precious gray lumps and those who covet them, but presents a highly informative account of the natural history of whales, squid, ocean ecology, and even a history of the perfume industry. Kemp’s obsessive curiosity is infectious, and eager readers will feel as though they have stumbled upon a precious bounty of this intriguing substance.
The Divine Right of Capital: Dethroning the Corporate Aristocracy
Marjorie KellyWealth inequity, corporate welfare, and industrial pollution are the symptoms of our sickened economy, Marjorie Kelly suggests. The underlying illness is shareholder primacy. In The Divine Right of Capital, she shows that the corporate drive to maximize shareholder profits at any cost is not only out of step with democratic and free-market principles, but is detrimental to the long-term health of individual companies and the economy as a whole. Steve Jobs
Walter IsaacsonBased on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

My Brother, Ernest Hemingway
Leicester Hemingway
The Sun Also Rises
Ernest HemingwayThe quintessential novel of the Lost Generation, The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. It is an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises helped to establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.
True At First Light: A Fictional Memoir
Ernest HemingwayBoth a revealing self-portrait and dramatic fictional chronicle of his final African safari, Ernest Hemingway's last unpublished work was written when he returned from Kenya in 1953. Edited by his son Patrick, who accompanied his father on the safari, True at First Light offers rare insights into the legendary American writer.

A blend of autobiography and fiction, the book opens on the day his close friend Pop, a celebrated hunter, leaves Ernest in charge of the safari camp and news arrives of a potential attack from a hostile tribe. Drama continues to build as his wife, Mary, pursues the great black-maned lion that has become her obsession, and Ernest becomes involved with a young African girl whom he supposedly plans to take as a second bride. Increasingly enchanted by the local African community, he struggles between the attraction of these two women and the wildly different cultures they represent. Spicing his depictions of human longings with sharp humor, Hemingway captures the excitement of big-game hunting and the unparallel beauty of the landscape. Rich in laughter, beauty and profound insight. True at First Light is an extraordinary publishing event — a breathtaking final work from one of our most beloved and important writers.

What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America
Thomas FrankOne of “our most insightful social observers”* cracks the great political mystery of our time: how conservatism, once a marker of class privilege, became the creed of millions of ordinary Americans

With his acclaimed wit and acuity, Thomas Frank turns his eye on what he calls the “thirty-year backlash”—the populist revolt against a supposedly liberal establishment. The high point of that backlash is the Republican Party’s success in building the most unnatural of alliances: between blue-collar Midwesterners and Wall Street business interests, workers and bosses, populists and right-wingers.

In asking “what ’s the matter with Kansas?”—how a place famous for its radicalism became one of the most conservative states in the union—Frank, a native Kansan and onetime Republican, seeks to answer some broader American riddles: Why do so many of us vote against our economic interests? Where’s the outrage at corporate manipulators? And whatever happened to middle-American progressivism? The questions are urgent as well as provocative. Frank answers them by examining pop conservatism—the bestsellers, the radio talk shows, the vicious political combat—and showing how our long culture wars have left us with an electorate far more concerned with their leaders’ “values” and down-home qualities than with their stands on hard questions of policy.

A brilliant analysis—and funny to boot—What’s the Matter with Kansas? presents a critical assessment of who we are, while telling a remarkable story of how a group of frat boys, lawyers, and CEOs came to convince a nation that they spoke on behalf of the People.

Gone Girl
Gillian FlynnMarriage can be a real killer.    One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.    On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?    As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?   With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun.

What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?

Kids will be imagining their own humorous conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak after sharing laughs with Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers. How to Have Sex in the Woods
Luann ColomboSex in the woods is not as simple as it sounds. Sure, you know the basics (after all, if you don't, you probably shouldn't try it in the wilderness), but what about all the little details that should be considered before embarking on an alfresco rendezvous that can make the difference between love under the moon and stars and love on the cold, hard ground? For example, what sex essentials should be part of your first-aid kit? What kind of camping equipment provides particular comfort for two? What are the effects of the elements on condoms, spermicides, and other contraceptives? How do you find that perfect spot for your love den? And how about foreplay, personal hygiene, and protection from pesky plants or adverse weather conditions while you're exposed?

How to Have Sex in the Woods answers these and other questions for the millions of hikers, backpackers, and campers who know that there's more than one way to commune with nature and that a campfire is good for more than just roasting marshmallows.

How to Have Sex in the Woods is full of useful, factual information, covering all the practical how-tos that every amorous camper should know but may have been afraid to ask. It is a must for anyone looking forward to his or her next outing á deux.

#1 bestselling author Harlan Coben asks that provocative and terrifying question with his fifteenth thriller.

#1 bestselling author Harlan Coben has become an unstoppable force in suspense fiction. His most recent novel, The Woods, spent more time on the New York Times bestseller list than his previous books and sales reached his highest levels to date. His latest page-turner, which is about just how far parents will go to protect their kids, is destined for the top of every bestseller list.

Tia and Mike Baye never imagined they’d become the type of overprotective parents who spy on their kids. But their sixteen-year-old son Adam has been unusually distant lately, and after the suicide of his classmate Spencer Hill—the latest in a string of issues at school—they can’t help but worry. They install a sophisticated spy program on Adam’s computer, and within days are jolted by a message from an unknown correspondent addressed to their son: “Just stay quiet and all safe.”

Meanwhile, browsing through an online memorial for Spencer put together by his classmates, Betsy Hill is struck by a photo that appears to have been taken on the night of her son’s death . . . and he wasn’t alone. She thinks it is Adam Baye standing just outside the camera’s range; but when Adam goes missing, it soon becomes clear that something deep and sinister has infected their community. For Tia and Mike Baye, the question they must answer is this: When it comes to your kids, is it possible to know too much?

Laugh: Portraits of the Greatest Comedians and the Stories They Tell Each Other
William Claxton, Kathleen Bywater, Mike ThomasA stirring combination of photography and narrative, Laugh showcases exquisite black-and-white photographs of fifty comedians and captures a previously unseen side of their character as they reveal, in their own words, what amuses them most. Famous for his smoky, soul-rendering photographs of jazz musicians, William Claxton has an intense rapport with his subjects, evident here more than ever as his lens captures the very essence of these entertainers and the place within them where comedy is born.

From contemporary classics like Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and Dan Aykroyd to the hip and hot—Paul Reiser, Margaret Cho, and Jon Stewart—to Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, and John Cleese, and others who shaped comedy, the men and women of Laugh dare to be themselves before William Claxton's lens. The stories they tell each other for laughs (from Hollywood humiliation to cheeky children) provide a raucous romp that is as dark as it is wry.

Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got Married
Gary D. Chapman"Most people spend far more time in preparation for their vocation than they do in preparation for marriage,” No wonder the divorce rate hovers around fifty percent.

Bestselling author and marriage counselor, Gary Chapman, hopes to change that with his newest book. Gary, with more than 35 years of counseling couples, believes that divorce is the lack of preparation for marriage and the failure to learn the skills of working together as intimate teammates.

So he put together this practical little book, packed with wisdom and tips that will help many develop the loving, supportive and mutually beneficial marriage men and women long for. It’s the type of information Gary himself wished he had before he got married.

This is not a book simply to be read. It is a book to be experienced. The material lends itself to heart-felt discussions by dating or engaged couples. To jump-start the exchanges, each short chapter includes insightful “Talking it Over” questions and suggestions. And, the book includes information on interactive websites as well as books that will enhance the couples experience.

Dr. Chapman even includes a thought-provoking appendix. By understanding and balancing the five key aspects of life, dating couples can experience a healthy dating relationship. A revealing learning exercise for dating couples is included at the end.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes—and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.

For a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz's overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods has become a modern classic of travel literature.
Goodnight Moon
Margaret Wise BrownIn a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room—to the picture of the three little bears sitting on chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one—the little bunny says goodnight.

In this classic of children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

Behind The Lines - The Untold Story of the Cincinnati Riots
Peter BronsonApril 7-14, 2001, Cincinnati, Ohio is torn apart. Sparked by police shooting in a dark alleyway, long-simmering frustrations boiled over as citizens stormed City Council chambers, and finding no answers there, took to the streets to vent their political anger on shopkeepers, unwary motorists, and the police. The stories that spilled out of the Queen City appeared nationally, on the front page of newspapers, including The New York Times, and on TV and radio broadcasts. Almost as scripted, the violence came to a halt on Good Friday, 2001 and the whole episode seemingly disappeared into the shadows of September 11th five months later. Now, five years later, untold stories of what took place at the eye of the storm and behind the scenes have finally emerged. As issues linger in city politics and neighborhoods, it's a story that needs to be told, talked about, and revisited in hopes of creating a beter city going forward. In clear-eyed and balanced reporting, veteran newsman and Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Peter Bronson circled back to get the story from the people who were on the front lines - the police, the politicians and the people on the street. In their words and actions, the reader will see that the real story of what happened that week in April, as well as in the months before and after, is different from what was reported then. Bronson gains access to the inner sanctums of political leaders and renegade activists to fill the stage with perspectives not captured in the fray. Most of all, readers will gain a vantage point from the center of the turmoil as the cops who put their lives on the line to protect the city are often misled, not listened to, or stifled by bureaucracy and cowardice. This is an important chapter in the city's history, with critical lessons for any city that hopes to avoid similar mistakes.

Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought Different: A Biography
Karen Blumenthal"Your time is limited. . . . have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."—Steve Jobs

From the start, his path was never predictable. Steve Jobs was given up for adoption at birth, dropped out of college after one semester, and at the age of twenty, created Apple in his parents' garage with his friend Steve Wozniack. Community: The Structure of Belonging
Peter BlockModern society is plagued by fragmentation. The various sectors of our communities—businesses, schools, social service organizations, churches, government—do not work together. They exist in their own worlds. As do so many individual citizens, who long for connection but end up marginalized, their gifts overlooked, their potential contributions lost. This disconnection and detachment makes it hard if not impossible to envision a common future and work towards it together. We know what healthy communities look like—there are many success stories out there, and they've been described in detail. What Block provides in this inspiring new book is an exploration of the exact way community can emerge from fragmentation: How is community built? How does the transformation occur? What fundamental shifts are involved? He explores a way of thinking about our places that creates an opening for authentic communities to exist and details what each of us can do to make that happen.

A Prayer for the City
Buzz Bissinger, H. G. BissingerIn 1990, Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights became an acclaimed bestseller and national sensation, igniting immediate debate about the role of high school football in small-town Texas.  Now, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist does for big cities what he did for small towns in this epic story of one remarkable politician's efforts to save a dying American City.

Mayor Edward Rendell will do almost anything for Philadelphia.  He will clean the bathrooms in City Hall, endure a joint appearance with Mickey Mouse, and personally lobby President Clinton to keep jobs in the city.  He is that rare politician who is larger than life in his ambitions, compassion, and flaws—a man wise enough to see the comic absurdity of his job, yet crazy enough to think he can actually revive his declining city.

To succeed, Rendell must negotiate a tough new contract with city workers who are threatening to strike and wreak havoc on the city.  He must allay African-American leaders engaged in a zero-sum game of racial politics.  He must combat the loss of tens of thousands of jobs that have brought the Workshop of the World to its knees.

As Rendell and his brilliant chief of staff, David Cohen fight these political battles, four citizens of Philadelphia engage in their own personal struggles, each one connected to events at City Hall:

Jim Mangan is a thirty-seven-year-old welder with a wife and six children.  Unless the mayor can achieve a miracle, he and thousands of others will lose their jobs at the city's historic Naval Shipyard.

Linda Morrison is a city-employed policy analyst who believes urban life can improve if the mayor embraces unprecedented change.  But will Rendell have the courage?  Will she be able to sustain her love for the city, or will the pressures of crime and taxes drive her away?

Mike McGovern is a prosecutor whose anger at the urban violence of the city fuels his drive for justice.  As he questions the personal cost of what he does, he faces one of his toughest trials, seeking life imprisonment for a teenager charged with murder.

Fifi Mazzccua is an elderly woman from the inner city raising four great-grandchildren while faithfully visiting her son in prison and hoping she'll live to see the day when he is freed.

At turns heart-wrenching and hilarious, A Prayer for the City dramatically illustrates high-pressure politics and the threat of economic decline facing so many cities.  No author has ever written with such humanity and insight about a politician in power and the way cities really work.

Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man and Life's Greatest Lesson
Mitch AlbomMaybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague.  Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.

For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder.  Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Mitch Albom had that second chance.  He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life.  Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college.  Their rekindled relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.

Hard Time Blues: How Politics Built a Prison Nation
Sasha AbramskyConsider this an anti-anticrime book. Journalist Sasha Abramsky believes America's exploding prison population is a fatal threat to civil society: "A democracy collapses in on itself if a significant percentage of the population are imprisoned for crimes committed because of economic want and the lack of legitimate jobs." The numbers tell a harsh story: a quarter century ago, fewer than half a million people were behind bars in the United States; today that figure is more than two million. In Hard Time Blues, Abramsky zeroes in on the experiences of Billy Ochoa, a nonviolent repeat offender who finds himself on the losing end of three-strikes laws, and Pete Wilson, the former governor of California whose political successes were tied to crime-fighting initiatives. The most interesting parts of the book focus on the political consequences of mass incarceration. In some states, 10 percent of the black population is in prison. Others disenfranchise felony offenders. It's possible to believe the American political scene would look rather different today if these criminals were also voters. Despite these interesting observations, Hard Time Blues may have a hard time of its own appealing to readers whose own sympathies extend more to the victims of crime than the perpetrators. —John Miller
